Goal Setting and a New Look At It.

I know what is going through your mind on this very moment…. Goals! Goals! Goals!

Can’t they stop talking about goals?  They say the mother of learning is repetition, and a short reminder about goal setting is part of repetition.

In his book “Beyond Positive Thinking”, Dr Robert Anthony talks about goal setting and a new look at it. Let’s look at some of the questions he asks in the chapter about goals:

# 1. Did you ever take a business trip without at least having some idea where you were going?

# 2. Did you ever play tennis without knowing where the tennis court was?

# 3. Have you ever left your house to do your weekly shopping without having at least some idea of where you were going to shop?

# 4. Have you ever taken a holiday without knowing where you wanted to go?

I bet that you can say yes to all of the above questions, but how many people you know can say YES to the next questions?

#1. Do you have goals for your tomorrow and the day after tomorrow?

#2. Do you live only in somebody else’s goal, such as your boss, or are you moving towards your own goals?

# 3. Have you ever written down your own goals for your own life?

Isn’t it strange that for our holidays we take merit goals, the games we play we have merit goals, and even the shopping we do we have merits goals, but we rarely establish goals for the most important journey of all – our own life.

Where you end up twenty or thirty years from now is all up to you, no one else. If you do have your goals in place for thirty years from now, That is really good and don’t take your eyes off your goal, and teach other people to understand this important principle about goal setting. If not, you need to set some goals for your life so that you will not end up in someplace where you do not want to be.

If you have not yet read this book, make it a goal to start reading it as the next “To Read” book on your list. If you love to get hold of Dr Robert Anthony’s book “Beyond Positive Thinking” You can just fill in my opt in form and I will send it to you.

  3. Goal setting is as important as breathing. Even the goal as import as getting out of bed and moving to go to work. Some people even small goals of placing one foot in front of the other to take a step.
We all have goals in life and in business. WE just have to start we baby size step and build to them one step at a time.

  4. Hi Theuns, thank you for your insight on goal setting.

For whatever reason, I’ll do it for a while and then get up with life in the short term. Some goals get accomplished and some get left undone. I think I did best when I wrote down a few and kept them in my wallet so I think I’ll try that again and try to stay focuses.

    Thanks again, great post!

    Hi Theuns,

Thank you for presenting a great article about goal setting. I have always been goal oriented and I believe it to be a life-long process. I remember in high school, I wrote down 10 goals I wanted to accomplish. Well, I accomplished all of them and I realized it was time to set some new ones!

I’m always working on daily, monthly, yearly, and lifetime goals. I love Tony Robbins quote because it is so true. They only become visible when you set them in motion.

How can you get anywhere if you don’t know where you are going? I hope you are healing quickly and I love your attitude about your misfortune with your leg. Take care my friend.

  6. Great post, Theuns! It’s not the goal setting I have a problem with. It’s the follow-through! I know what I need to do to get where I want to go, but the consistent day-by-day activity is a challenge.

    Hi Theuns,

I haven’t read this book of Dr. Anthony’s but I have read one of his other ones.

I think for most people, I know I was this way, I didn’t have any goals for the rest of my life. I just expected to have a job that would support me until it was time to retire and I just thought that was the way it was.

I’ve had some pretty drastic things happen to me in my life early on that changed the direction of where I was heading at the snap of my fingers so I decided that trying to plan for my future wasn’t worth it. I knew that it could change at any time so I just went with the flow.

For the most part now, I’ve learned that I do have goals I want to achieve and a certain life I want to lead. I have no doubt this is a great read and I’ll add this one to my list.

Thanks for sharing this and sure hope you’re up and about soon.

I completely agree that we need to set our goals in life. Planning for the future is important so we must know where we want to go and where we are headed. Knowing what we want gives us a better understanding of how we want to achieve things and how we can ensure that it can be done.

I do believe that many of use put more effort into planing a vacation than our lives.. I realized this a few years ago and although it was a slap in the face at the time it made perfect sense… I am still a bit neglectful of the planning daily goals and business, but I am by far much better at it than 8 years ago. Great post!

    Theuns,

    Goals can sometimes get lost.

I have the goal to quit smoking on New Years day for example. Or the goal to lose weight. People miss their goals all the time because they are setting goals.

I prefer to use the word mission. My daily mission is to do X. My mission for the week is to run x amount of miles etc etc. That way if I am failing, then I am failing a mission. Sounds worse then failed to meet my goal right?

Its important that no matter what you call them, you should have them. They keep you organized and on task taking you and your business forward everyday.

    Hi Theuns,

Yes, you are right about goals. I know setting tasks for the next day is good, although I don’t do it that often.

I did go on vacation once not knowing where I would end up. It was fun.

The good thing about writing down goals is that it makes you accountable!

    Hi Theuns

That looks like a great book! I have been a lover of all things personal development since I could walk and talk. Setting goals was part of our home, and just how I was brought up. If I wanted something I set a goal to achieve it. As I got older, I learned the more serious and deeper laws of the Universe and got an understanding of the partnership our thoughts play, as well as our emotions. Bob Proctor has been a huge influence on me, as well as Napoleon Hill when it comes to setting goals.

There can never be too many reminders about goal setting. Although we may do it ourselves, we all fall off the track. It is so important in our business to accomplish those little goals first. It’s a great feeling.
To me, short term goals gives me the incentive to accomplish my long term goals.

We need to have our goals set but we also need to remain felxible in our approac.

    Hey Theuns,

I’m absolutely obsessed with Tony Robbins work. I’m going to see him in San Jose, Ca for a 4 day event with fire walk and all that craziness.

Goal setting is crucial, but for a change I decided to do something different. I made a map where I put down literally hundreds of things that I need to do (most of them something I don’t want to do but I feel I should) in order to get a definite the level of success and self improvement that I’d like.
Each and every day I do something toward to accomplish a couple of them. It’s pretty challenging because I put my gut on the line, I always keep stress on my comfort zone.

    great share!

It is definitely OK to hear about goals again. They are such an important part of our lives. Sometimes we might get a bit tired of hearing about them, but a lot of that, is a twinge of guilt because we know this is something we should be doing yet we do not.

So its actually a very nice thing to have well written post like this one to provide another reminder that its time to set those goals. Short term and long term and even really long range goals. Thank you Theuns. :-)

Hey my friend. As always, you are right to the point with some great reminders. As you’ve probably learned by now, I’m great at having goals in my head, but not the best at writing them down and putting them in black and white. It’s like when I was in school and just had a heck of a time writing outlines. It was like pulling eye teeth to get me to do that. I just wanted to get in there where the action was and write the paper — forget figuring out how was going to get there! HA! Hey . . . somehow that practice miraculously worked in writing my Master’s thesis. My thesis committee loved it!

Interesting take on goals – having goals for tomorrow and the day after. Haven’t put really short term goals into effect. Or even having goals for this morning and this afternoon. One would tend to focus on the things necessary to accomplish those goals. I like the idea. Thanks,
