Goal Setting — Why is goal setting important for you and your business?
Goal setting, Goal setting, Goal setting. These are most likely the words that you hear the most from successful people and motivational speakers when you listen to audios, read their books or attend their conferences.
There is an old saying that goes like this : “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” So my question to you is, do you aim at something worthy?
Let’s look at the definition of goal setting. “Goal setting is the process of deciding what you want to accomplish and devising a plan for achieving the result you desire.”
On average people do not have a problem with the first part of the above statement. Most people have goals, but the problem is that they only stay goals in their minds with no action steps attach to them. How many people do you know who say, “I want to stop smoking” as a new year resolution, but it never happens? So let’s look at ways in which you can accomplish your goal.
Here are a few action steps to follow that will help you to the attach “action” to your goals, and then we will look at why goal setting is important for you and your business.
• Get a clear vision and picture of your goal.
• Split your goal into smaller parts. As I all way ask people, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
• Decide on a weekly task to accomplish that will help you to stay motivated about your goal.
• Reward yourself for completing a task that brings you closer to your goal.
• Set a time and date for when you want to accomplish your goal.
Now that I have given you some pointers to help you with the action part of goal setting, let’s see why it is important to have a goal.
1.Meaning
Goal setting motivates you to achieve what you want. Once you know how to set goals, your ability to attach meaning to your deepest desires results in a level of motivation.
Setting goals give your life more meaning, purpose and passion.
2.Time
Well chosen goals mean you spend your time doing things that align with your values — everything you do has a point and purpose.
3.Truth
Well chosen goals take you out of your comfort zone. Anything that does this, whether you want it or not, presents the best opportunity for growth.
“Once you know, you grow.”
4.Feeling
Yes, the process can be painful, but the journey is often as good as the destination.
Goal setting affects now because it gives you something to look forward to, and this feeling is available this very moment.
5.Choice
You choose the direction your life takes – you need to take full responsibility for the actions and consequences.
It does not matter whether your goal is to leave something good or leave something bad; accept that you chose everything in your life now and you are responsible for the outcome of it.
“Why is goal setting important? Because it injects creativity, promotes growth and ultimately, helps you fulfill your potential” ~Brain Tracy~
I am a big believer in goal setting and also in “Practice what you preach”; so here is what I did with my goal setting this past year.
I set a goal for this year that my “grAtitude!” board game must be ready to hit the market so that I can help the world with wisdom and success principals in a fun way.
I set my weekly goals that I pointed out and applied all five steps of them. On my way towards my goal, Steve became “my partner in success”, and today I can say with an open heart that the “grAtitude!” game will hit the market by 17 Jan 2012.
If you want to be part of my goal’s end result on the 17th of January 2012 just opt in to my opt-in form and be part of this and become part of the “It’s all about grAtitude!” movement
“People who do not have goals are doomed to work forever for those who do!”
I hope that I was able to open something about goal setting for you or even just remind you how important it is to have goals.

Great post. I agree that in our businesses we need goal setting. Once we have set goals we can plan what course of action we will take. Creating a clear picture of what we want is also important.

I think what you said here: “On average people do not have a problem with the first part of the above statement. Most people have goals, but the problem is that they only stay goals in their minds with no action steps attach to them.” summarizes it perfectly. Goals are fine, but there mean nothing if you do not have any determined action steps to reach them.
Thanks Lynda, glad you Enjoy it
Setting goals is definitely important in my book. It keeps me on track and where I am and want to be. I think in business success, setting those goals include taking on: How am I going to get from here to there? and to do it with a positive attitude and viewing it as a challenge to overcome, rather than something that might end up in failure.
I set short and long term goals… ones that can be achieved, but not too easily.

Theuns,
this is a great way to start with setting goals. Yet, first you must visualize what you want. See it happening and then they way or steps to get there. Then write it down. Do not worry about the hows. Just know why you want or desire it.
Those things like goals. They are always taken or approached wrong. I want to stop smoking. No, I refuse to smoke on January 1, 2012. This is the way to set steps that will be done. Goals are for business marking ways to grow. They are adjustable. Our steps to achieve everything we desire will be done without any exceptions. We visualize it and see ourselves having it done. They way will be shown by imagination of doing it now.
There was a study done with runners in the olympics. They imagine running the race and winning. It was done with the same mucles and energy as when the visualized it. That is how everything one wants is done. You visualize it and imagine doing it now. Then live as it has been done. It works each time for years.
Goals are good for business models. Steps or task will get done to achieve our desires. Nothing has limitations except our imaginations which can be changed. Only speak of what we want and will do. Do not allow ourself to think of “What if this happens”.
Just do it. I will have the game board on the market on January 17, 2012. Now do things as though it already is taking place. Now that you have global marketing what is next to impact the world.
Theuns, your facinating and one of our great visionaries. You keep me smiling and happy with all the passion with your project. I will see it to manifest on January 17, 2012. Keep giving all of us the hope to accomplish our passions the same way.

Setting goals is priority for any endeavor I want to accomplish, I agree with Marquita, priorities are my first thing. I had to learn it the hard way, and I could not understand why everything was moving so slow, until I establish my priorities in life and my goals were right on target.

thank you for putting all the most important points in this well written post.
I believe that in order to leverage the results of gola setting one could ask him or herself what are the values i want to focus on this year, what is the most importnat value I choose to focus on this year?
For example instead of freedom which was my main value in 2011, I am choosing gratitude.
There is always a reason why we choose what we choose. now , as a 2d step, I like to design my goals having this value in mind and the ” taste” and ” color” of the goal changes right away, garanteed!
Thanks again for this post it gives me the opportunity to go back and check where I am this 1st month regarding my values and goals:)
Theuns, this was very well said. My biggest take-away is the comment about not only setting goals, but making action steps to complete them. So necessary! My biggest problem in setting goals is that I tend to set too many of them or set them so high that they are impossible to reach. I’m learning to set my goals a bit lower (some people would say not to do this), so that I can actually achieve them. Good post!

I love your advice. I know that goal setting is important but your article really turned on a light. It’s not only to get there faster but to enjoy the process while we are at it. Also I see how much time I waste on a daily basis, and setting up goals will greatly improve my time optimization.

Hi Theuns!
I can’t but agree with you that goal setting is really important. You have to see clearly what you want, only then you’ll be able to find the ways and tools to achieve it.
Hi Theuns,

Theuns, like Marquita said above, it’s a great idea to connect your goals with your life mission/vision/purpose, as well as with your top 5 personal values. Thanks for outlining the blessing that goals can bring to our lives, and I wish you a very prosperous 2012!

Setting goals are so important, and I agree you must take action. So many people do not…I have been guilty of this myself.
I like your tip about setting smaller weekly tasks to accomplish your ultimate goal. You really do feel like you will eat that elephant.

Sounds like great advice. I normally take things back a bit further to establishing life priorities before jumping into goal setting – only because most people tend to set goals that are far more like a list of “shoulds” rather than what will end up creating the life they really want for themselves.
